5 Pet-Friendly Houseplants You Will Love!
If you’re worried about your pets getting into your houseplants, I have good news! There are many houseplants to choose from that are safe for pets and also look amazing.
I put together a list of great houseplants that are pet-friendly so you don’t have to stress about your fur-baby. There are definitely way more out there — this is just a good starting point. Who knows, maybe I will add to this more over time!
We’re keeping it simple today — Let’s get right into it!
Hoya Carnosa Tri-Color
We are starting off with a real winner here! Hoya Carnosa Tri-Color, also known as Hoya Krimson Queen, is a beautiful wining houseplant with white rimmed leaves. These plants can also have pink throughout some of their leaves — which I absolutely love!
These plants are known as semi-succulent, meaning their care falls somewhere between succulents and tropical plants.
I find this plant to be very easy to care for; it doesn’t take much for these to be happy!
-
Water: Water these plants when the soil has dried out completely. For me, that’s about every 10 days!
-
Sunlight: Bright, indirect light for these babies!
Pilea Peperomioides
These plants are so cutie. Their thin stems and perfectly round leaves are so unique and fun! Pilea is also known as Chinese Money Plant because the shape of the leaves look like coins.
Pilea are also very easy to grow and propagate. As the plant matures, it will grow little mini plant pups around the base of the mother plant that you can pluck out of the soil to make a new plant! That is how I got my pilea and it has been so fun to watch him grow from a little tiny propagation.
-
Water: Water your pilea when the top 2 inches of the soil are dry. About once a week for me.
-
Sunlight: Bright, indirect sunlight. (this plant won’t do very well in low light)
Spider Plant
Spider Plants seem to be a very popular choice for many plant lovers! They are easy to care for and have interesting leaves, thin and straight, different from any other houseplant I know of. On top of that, spider plants are pet friendly!
Like I said, spider plants are pretty simple when it comes to care. One thing that a lot of people have trouble with is the tips of the leaves turning brown. This can be caused by a few things. The two most common reasons are sunburn or watering. Tap water can be the cause of leave tips turning brown, but also underwatering or overwatering could also be the cause.
-
Water: In growing seasons, keep soil slightly moist. In winter months, allow the soil to dry out slightly in between waterings.
-
Sunlight: These plants like having a spot with soft morning sun, like an east facing window. Direct, afternoon sun can burn the leaves.
Peperomia Obtusifolia
One of the first plants I ever bought! A great pet-friendly houseplant option — peperomias are so cute and easy to care for (my fav).
This plant is also called “Baby Rubberplant” because the leaves are rubber in texture and only about an inch or so wide. This might be the perfect plant to put on the coffee table or end table. Actually, the perfect plant to put anywhere, lol.
They make for a great beginner plant as they are very low maintenance.
-
Water: I usually water mine about every 10 days or so. Wait for the soil to dry out before watering again.
-
Sunlight: Medium to bright-indirect light is best for these buddies! But they can also do well in lower light conditions. They will not like direct sun so avoid that!
Calathea Orbifolia
These plants can be a little high maintenance, but they are so worth it! Calathea Orbifolia is a beautiful, pet-friendly houseplant that will enhance any space. Their leaves are stunning!
They are not the easiest plant to care for, but they are also not the most difficult. Once you learn what they need and how they like to be cared for, you should be good to go!
Calathea Orbifolias are very sensitive to water that has too many chemicals or minerals. Tap water will often cause their leaves to burn or turn brown around the edges. Use filtered or distilled water when watering this plant if possible.
-
Water: Water your Calathea Orbifolia once a week. They like their soil to stay moist and never dry out. Remember to use filtered or distilled water!
-
Sunlight: Medium to bright indirect light. Indirect is a key word here! Harsh direct light will sunburn their beautiful leaves.
There you have it! Five pet friendly houseplants that will add beauty to your home. I love all of these houseplants and how unique they each are from the other.
